Week 1: Arriving in Jakarta

Updated: May 31, 2023

Meet the team

We did our best to sleep on the plane, and finally arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday afternoon. A long immigration wait, exchanging SIM cards, and getting Indonesian rupiah took awhile, but we arrived to our Ibis hotel in Jakarta happy to be in our new Indonesian home base.

For dinner we ate at Remboelan Citos, an Indonesian restaurant, where we ate some traditional dishes before heading to bed for an early night. The fried squid and fried corn cakes were both tasty - and we learned we’ll need to increase our spice tolerance while we’re here!

Meet the team!

After working together for almost four months, we finally got to meet the Dagangan team in person on Monday morning! After introductions, we had a working session, delivered our arrival presentation and aligned on project scope and schedule for the two weeks. The Daganagan leadership team asked us to continue to focus on the new product pilot, but also to include an Operational Excellence analysis across the top five business areas as part of our final deliverables. To accomplish this task, we quickly got to work on interviewing stakeholders from these five business areas, as well as company suppliers and customers (Warung corner store owners).

Between Monday and Thursday, we met with teams from Merchandising, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Product and Supply-Chain to understand and map their existing processes and provide recommendations on Ops Excellence improvement.

Dinner with Haasies

Abby had reached out to the Jakarta Haas alumn group, who kindly offered to take us out to dinner. On Monday night, we had dinner with Anag Umaedi, Haas MBA alumn, class of 1999, as well as two of our current class of 2014 classmates: Dede and Ji Soo Choi. Dinner was typical Indonesian food such as Chicken Satay and Nasi Goreng

Warehouse and Warung visits

On Tuesday, we got to visit Dagangan´s warehouse in Cileungsi, a suburb of Jakarta. We saw the hub operations and walked through each of the processes from product receive, stow, pick, pack and stage, to shipping and truck departure. At the hub, we got to see the morning rush, and follow the first truck departure process at 9AM.

We were happy to see some of the baby products we recommended, such as diapers and baby formula!

In Cileungsi, we also got to visit four Warung stores and interview the owners. Most warungs were family businesses. We got to shadow the sales team, and observe the warungs interacting with and placing orders on the Dagangan app. We took some time to speak to each warung, to understand more about their business, and their perception of Dagangan. Warungs also had the Mamy Poko diapers on display! We felt our recommendations were being impactful!

We also got to see the large economic disparities which occur within the wider city of Jakarta. The day before we were in central Jakarta in a luxury mall, and were now in the warehouse and warung shops on unpaved roads, just thirty-minutes outside of the city.

Supplier visit

On Wednesday, we got to visit one of Daganan´s largest suppliers: Unilever. We visited their office in Jakarta and met with Kevin, the Dagangan account manager. We got to ask Kevin questions about Unilever´s relationship with Dagangan and the strategic vision for the partnership between the two companies.

Workshops

On Friday, we kicked off the Operational Excellence workshops. We delivered the first two workshops on operational excellence: Marketing and Customer Service on Thursday. Both teams were very open to our recommendations, and excited to start driving implementation. Aldi, the head of customer service told us he was excited to get started on Monday!
